Interview With Princess Maryllia

This week I’m interviewing Maryllia Vance, Captain in the Royal Planet Fleet and Princess of Darantha.

What is your full name? Do you have a nickname (if so, who calls you this)?

My full name is Maryllia [pronounced Mar-REEL-leah] Jane Arika Vance. Jory will sometimes call me Leah for short.

What did you want to be when you grew up?

I wanted to be many things! (laughs) But ballerina and teacher were always high on my list. I guess I sort of became a teacher since I train people in security.

Do you trust anyone to protect you? Who, and why?

My brother, Jory. He can be a little too protective sometimes, but I know it’s because he loves me. But he’d do anything to keep me safe. I also trust Evalycer Nicholls. I know her from her security days and she put her life on the line many times for me.

Are you right- or left handed?

I’m right-handed

What do you have in your pockets?

(reaches into the pocket of her uniform) Lip balm, wallet with RPF ID and credit card, and lint.

What is your greatest strength?

I’m assuming you’re not talking about my abilities.

Correct.

My work ethic, I suppose. I’m always at the base and I rarely leave anything unfinished.

What is your greatest weakness?

Not trusting myself.

Do you tend to argue with people, or avoid conflict?

I’ll argue. People tend to concede after a while because I’m royalty, but I encourage them to continue if they know they’re right. I’ll change my mind if they can give me solid evidence.

Are you able to kill? Under what circumstances do you find killing to be acceptable or unacceptable?

I’ve been trained to kill and how to kill. Doing it is another matter. I’m able to kill if needed without hesitation. It’s acceptable if your life is in danger or you’re protecting someone or something else. Killing just because, like Radern did—nope.

If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?

I’d like to be taller. I inherited my mother’s family’s short stature. Barely made the minimum height requirement for the RPF!
